BEDFORD — The Green Hill Cemetery Board will hold a rededication ceremony Monday, Sept. 14, honoring Rebecca Dillingham Dewey, the first recorded burial in the cemetery.
The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. in the old section of Green Hill Cemetery, located at 1202 18th St. in Bedford.
Dewey, who lived from 1788 to 1826, died at age 38. According to the Green Hill Cemetery Board, she was a talented watercolor artist, an early educator, and a friend of renowned naturalist and artist John James Audubon.
Organizers say the ceremony will recognize Dewey’s legacy and her place in the early history of the Bedford community. A symbolic 19th-century bouquet of remembrance will be laid in her honor.
The event is intended to connect the community with its history and help preserve Dewey’s story for future generations.
The Green Hill Cemetery Board invites the public to attend the ceremony.
