INDIANA – Today, Congresswoman Erin Houchin (IN-09) celebrated the Department of War’s announcement that Naval Weapons Station (NWS) Crane will host Indiana’s first advanced nuclear Micro Modular Reactor (MMR), with installation planned no later than September 2028.
The project, executed jointly by the Army’s Janus Program, the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment, the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, and the State of Indiana, will deliver reliable, around-the-clock power to one of the nation’s premier warfighting innovation hubs.
“Crane is a unique and valuable asset to our National Defense Portfolio, and this investment demonstrates that Indiana is at the forefront of unleashing American energy,” said Rep. Houchin. “With proven success in powering submarines, microreactors at our military installations is a natural next step in U.S. energy deployment and rebuilding our nuclear supply chain. The project will also have a positive impact at West Gate due to increased power supply to the base. As the first power-producing nuclear reactor sited in Indiana, the Crane MMR will expand the state’s power generation capacity and support the region’s long-standing role as a hub for national defense research and manufacturing. The project implements President Trump’s Executive Orders on deploying advanced nuclear reactor technologies for national security and reinvigorating the nuclear industrial base.
