MONROE COUNTY — A 19-year-old woman is dead, and an 18-year-old man remains hospitalized following an overnight single-vehicle rollover crash in southern Monroe County.
Deputies with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday to the 8300 block of South State Road 446, near the intersection of Allens Creek Road, after receiving reports of a severe accident.
According to preliminary investigative reports, a Subaru was traveling along State Road 446 when the vehicle left the roadway and overturned multiple times.
Emergency first responders worked to extricate and treat the occupants at the scene.
A 19-year-old female passenger from Medora succumbed to injuries sustained during the rollover and was pronounced deceased. Her identity has been withheld pending formal notification by the coroner’s office.
The driver, an 18-year-old male from Franklin, suffered severe injuries and was airlifted by an emergency medical helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for advanced treatment.
The cause of the collision remains under active investigation. Members of the Monroe County Major Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene to reconstruct the crash, analyze roadway conditions, and evaluate potential contributing factors such as speed, visibility, or mechanical failure.
The section of State Road 446 near Allens Creek Road runs adjacent to Monroe Lake and features winding stretches, minimal lighting, and dense rural tree lines, presenting heightened navigation hazards during late-night and early-morning hours. Public safety officials frequently urge motorists traveling rural county corridors overnight to maintain posted speed limits, avoid distractions, and ensure seatbelts are fastened at all times.
