INDIANA — Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana is committing an additional $100,000 to support ongoing recovery efforts following the severe storms and flooding that impacted communities across the state this summer. Combined with an additional $25,000 from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBI), the latest investments will provide $125,000 in new support for Indiana storm and flood recovery.
The new funding focuses on one of the most pressing challenges Hoosiers are dealing with after the summer storms: having safe housing while rebuilding their lives. It includes:
- $75,000 to Legacy Foundation to support the Greater Gary Storm Recovery and Relief Fund and Housing Stabilization grants, helping address immediate food and housing recovery needs for Gary residents affected by the storms and flooding.
- $25,000 from Anthem and $25,000 from FHLBI, for a combined $50,000 investment, to support disaster-related housing recovery efforts for eligible households across Indiana. Anthem’s $25,000 contribution will be used in the same manner as FHLBI’s funding to help address eligible disaster-related recovery expenses.
The new $100,000 commitment builds on $116,500 in flood-relief support that Anthem and the Anthem Foundation announced in August, bringing Anthem’s total investment in response to the recent Indiana storms and flooding to $216,500. With FHLBI’s additional $25,000 contribution, the combined support represented through these efforts totals $241,500.
Initial Response in August
Anthem’s initial response supported organizations addressing immediate and longer-term needs, including the American Red Cross, Heart of Indiana United Way, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, New Shoe Day, and Firefly Children and Family Alliance. Anthem also funded approximately 500 hygiene kits distributed through community organizations in storm-impacted counties.
New Funding
As recovery efforts continue, the latest investment places additional emphasis on helping Hoosiers address housing-related needs that can persist long after the immediate emergency has passed.
Through the FHLBI Disaster Relief Program, the combined $50,000 investment from Anthem and FHLBI will help eligible Indiana homeowners with disaster-related recovery expenses not covered by insurance or other state or federal assistance. The program serves owner-occupied households meeting income eligibility requirements and provides grants of up to $1,000 per household.
Eligible assistance may include temporary housing or lodging, emergency home repairs, emergency power supplies, replacement of certain essential household systems, utility reconnection fees, and transportation related to relocation or medical needs.
In Gary, Anthem’s $75,000 investment through Legacy Foundation will help respond to immediate food and housing needs while also supporting longer-term housing for residents affected by the summer storms.
The additional investment reflects the evolving needs communities experience following severe weather. Immediate disaster response often focuses on shelter, food, and essential supplies. As communities move into recovery, families can face longer-term challenges involving damaged homes, displacement, financial hardship, and other barriers to stability.
Anthem will continue working with nonprofit and community partners to monitor recovery needs and help strengthen the health and resilience of Indiana communities.
