Worker rescued after becoming trapped in Martinsville storm drain

MARTINSVILLE Emergency crews executed a technical confined-space rescue Tuesday afternoon after a worker became trapped inside a storm drain in Martinsville.

Firefighters with the Martinsville Fire Department responded to the area of East South Street following a phone call reporting an individual trapped underground. Upon arrival, first responders located an adult male stuck approximately 7 feet deep inside a narrow drainage structure.

Rescuers immediately set up a specialized confined-space entry rig. Firefighters rigged a harness system using ropes and a mechanical hoist to safely lift the victim up through the access opening.

The victim informed firefighters on scene that he had entered the underground drainage system in an attempt to clean debris from the drain. Following the successful extraction, Martinsville EMS evaluated the worker on site and transported him to a nearby hospital for further medical assessment.

Public safety officials emphasize that storm drains and drainage catch basins are classified as confined spaces, which present significant technical hazards to untrained individuals:

  • Oxygen Deficiency and Toxic Gases: Storm sewers and subsurface runoff drains frequently accumulate hazardous atmospheric hazards, including decaying organic vegetation, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and depleted oxygen levels.
  • Physical Trapping Risks: Narrow pipes and intake basins often taper significantly, creating severe pinch points where individuals can quickly become wedge-trapped or unable to maneuver backward.
  • Flash Flooding Hazards: Catchment basins are designed to channel high-volume surface runoff quickly, creating rapid engulfment risks if weather conditions shift upstream.

Safety guidelines recommend that municipal infrastructure maintenance involving storm sewer networks be performed exclusively by certified personnel using proper air monitoring, ventilation blowers, tripod hoist systems, and dedicated topside safety attendants.
