Prosperity Indiana and partners expand heirs’ property education across Indiana

INDIANA – Prosperity Indiana, in partnership with Indiana Legal Services (ILS), is expanding public education efforts to help Hoosiers protect their homes, understand heirs’ property, and preserve opportunities for future generations. The initiative is informed by research conducted by Black Onyx Management and funded by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBI).

For many families, a home is more than a place to live. It represents years of hard work, family memories, financial stability, and an opportunity to build generational wealth. However, when a homeowner passes away without clear plans for transferring property, families can face complicated ownership issues that may make it difficult to maintain, repair, refinance, sell, or keep a family home. “At a time when the cost of living continues to outpace wage growth here in Indiana, we must deploy all of our resources to keep Hoosier families stably housed,” said Aspen Clemons, Executive Director of Prosperity Indiana.

Through the Your Home, Your Family, Your Legacy, public education effort, residents and community partners can access practical education, trusted resources, and opportunities to better understand heirs’ property and planning for the future.

Education and Resources

Opportunities include:

Programming is relevant for future homebuyers, current and longtime homeowners, people who have inherited or expect to inherit family property, seniors, caregivers, and families planning for the future.

Bring This Conversation to Your Community

Prosperity Indiana and its partners are seeking opportunities to bring this education directly into communities across Indiana.

Community organizations, neighborhood associations, faith communities, financial institutions, housing organizations, REALTORS® and real estate professionals, libraries, and other trusted partners are invited to participate.

Organizations can:

  • Invite the initiative to an existing homeownership, financial wellness, legacy, or community event
  • Host an heirs’ property workshop or presentation
  • Share free monthly webinars and educational resources with their networks
  • Participate in Train-the-Trainer opportunities
  • Help connect homeowners and families with trusted information and resources

Organizations do not need to be legal or housing experts to participate. Trusted community partners can play an important role by creating awareness, starting conversations, and helping families know where to turn for additional assistance.

Why It Matters

Homeownership doesn’t end at closing.

Whether someone is preparing to purchase their first home, has owned a home for decades, or expects to inherit family property, understanding how ownership and planning can affect a home is an important part of protecting that asset.

Increasing awareness today can help families make informed decisions, reduce future challenges, strengthen housing stability, and preserve family and community wealth for generations to come.
