Purdue High-Speed Propulsion Lab earns International Quality Certification

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue University’s High-Speed Propulsion Lab has earned an internationally recognized quality management certification, becoming the first Purdue research facility to receive ISO 9001 certification.

The certification was awarded by BSI to ZL9 at Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories and is expected to make it easier for the lab to work with partners in the highly regulated aerospace and defense industries.

Only about 50 other organizations affiliated with U.S. universities have previously received the certification, according to Purdue.

ISO 9001 is an internationally recognized standard for quality management systems. Organizations seeking certification must establish documented policies and procedures designed to ensure consistent operations, meet applicable requirements and build trust with customers and partners.

“This milestone reflects Purdue’s commitment to advancing high-impact research through strong partnerships with industry,” said Dan DeLaurentis, Purdue’s executive vice president for research. “ISO 9001 certification demonstrates ZL9’s commitment to quality while enhancing its ability to support critical aerospace and defense initiatives that strengthen our nation’s technological leadership.”

Building a stronger research operation

Purdue’s Office of Audit, Enterprise Risk and Operational Resilience led the effort to secure the certification for ZL9.

The Operational Resilience team developed a quality management system specifically for the facility, documenting important operational and support processes, establishing performance measurements, creating document controls and preparing the laboratory for internal and external audits.

Dimitrios Peroulis, Purdue’s senior vice president for partnerships and online, said the certification is about more than simply meeting requirements.

“The value of ISO 9001 extends far beyond compliance. It creates a foundation for continuous improvement, strengthens organizational accountability and helps ensure that quality is embedded in how we work every day,” Peroulis said.

He added that the certification will help Purdue better serve research sponsors, industry partners and the broader research community.

Supporting aerospace and defense research

ZL9 opened in 2024 and is the newest facility on the 24-acre Zucrow Laboratories campus. Zucrow is recognized as the world’s largest academic propulsion laboratory and supports research involving combustion, turbines and compressors, energetic materials, hypersonics, aerodynamics and fluid mechanics.

ZL9 includes advanced testing capabilities for rocket and high-speed air-breathing propulsion.

Robert Lucht, the Ralph and Bettye Bailey Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of Zucrow Labs, said the certification provides independent confirmation of the lab’s commitment to maintaining consistent quality throughout the research and development process.

“We’ve earned the trust of numerous industry and government partners over the last 78 years,” Lucht said. “However, this third-party certification puts it into writing. Zucrow’s ZL9 is a secure facility that can provide the assurance of quality at every phase of the research and development process.”

Certification could open new opportunities

The new quality management framework is designed to be scalable, meaning Purdue can potentially use the approach at other research facilities.

Plans are already underway for at least three additional College of Engineering laboratories to pursue ISO 9001 certification.

The certification could also benefit Purdue faculty, staff and students by creating additional opportunities to work with private-sector partners on industry projects and technologies.

For students, those partnerships can provide hands-on experience with real-world research and development while helping them develop skills that can be valuable as they enter the workforce.

“When lab facilities operate at this level of quality and consistency, the benefits reach every part of the research ecosystem,” DeLaurentis said. “This certification is an important acknowledgment of the standards that have always guided Purdue’s research excellence.”

ISO is an independent, nongovernmental organization that develops international standards for the quality and safety of products and services. ZL9 received its certification through BSI, a global certification organization that works with organizations across numerous industries.

BSI Senior Vice President of Americas Assurance Jessica Patel congratulated Purdue and Zucrow Labs on the achievement, saying the certification demonstrates the laboratory’s commitment to quality management and continuous improvement.

With ZL9 now ISO 9001 certified, Purdue officials say the achievement will help strengthen the university’s connections with industry while creating new possibilities for aerospace, defense and advanced propulsion research.
