Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard in Bloomington to host Annual Garden Gala with $5,000 matching grant

BLOOMINGTON Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard is gearing up for its annual Garden Gala on Aug. 28, offering community members an evening of local food, live music and fundraising to support local food access and educational programming.

The event will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the organization’s facility, 1100 W. Allen St.

Organizers have set a baseline fundraising target of $20,000 for the evening, with hopes of surpassing last year’s total of $23,000. Boosting this year’s effort is a new dollar-for-dollar matching grant for the first $5,000 raised, effectively doubling early contributions and securing an initial $10,000 toward community programs.

Attendees will enjoy live musical entertainment from local group Don’t Call Me Betty, alongside local food and drinks. The evening will also feature a raffle with $1 tickets.

“Each dollar you give will become $2 to support our programming for the first $5,000,” said CEO Megan Betz, emphasizing that educational initiatives remain a primary focus of the fundraiser.

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard operates as a community food resource center dedicated to expanding access to healthy, nutritious food while cultivating dignity, agency and community connection.

In conjunction with the gala, organization leadership is highlighting National Make-A-Will Month this August. Pointing out that more than half of Americans currently do not have a will, organizers are encouraging supporters to consider planned giving and estate planning as ways to sustain low-barrier food access over the long term.

Gifts included in wills or estate plans help ensure Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard “remains a reliable low-barrier, community-building resource for our community well into the future,” according to Betz.
