Indianapolis man’s body recovered from Monroe Lake

MONROE COUNTY Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the death of an Indianapolis man whose body was recovered from Monroe Lake, southeast of Bloomington, on Sunday, August 16th.

Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 3:53 p.m. to the lake area near Allen’s Creek after receiving reports of an unconscious person pulled from the water.

According to state officials, 58-year-old Jeffrey Cox of Indianapolis had been boating with a group when he went missing while the vessel was anchored. Cox was unaccounted for approximately 5 to 10 minutes before being discovered unresponsive in the water near the boat. He was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the incident.

First responders and bystanders attempted CPR and other lifesaving measures, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. Cox was pronounced deceased at approximately 4:55 p.m.

The incident remains under investigation by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Law Enforcement Division. Assisting at the scene were the Monroe Fire Protection District and Indiana University Health.

Indiana Conservation Officers remind all boaters and swimmers of the critical importance of wearing a life jacket at all times when on or near the water.
