INDIANA – A Heat Advisory is in effect across the region until 8:00 p.m. EDT Sunday as oppressive temperatures and high humidity combine to create hazardous conditions.

The National Weather Service warns that heat index values could reach or approach 109 degrees during the peak afternoon hours. The combination of extreme heat and humidity significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Weather officials strongly advise residents to take the following precautions:
- Hydrate Frequently: Drink plenty of fluids, particularly water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages, which can increase dehydration.
- Stay Indoors: Remain in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Fans alone may not be sufficient to prevent heat-related illness during extreme temperatures.
- Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak daylight hours. If you must go outside, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and seek shade.
- Check on Vulnerable Neighbors: Regularly check up on relatives, elderly neighbors, and individuals living alone who may be more susceptible to severe heat.
- Protect Pets: Ensure pets have plenty of fresh, cold water and access to shaded or air-conditioned shelter. Avoid walking dogs on hot pavement, which can cause severe burns to their paws.
- Never Leave Anyone in Vehicles: Never leave children or pets unattended in a parked car, as interior temperatures can reach lethal levels within minutes.
Recognizing heat illness is critical. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include dizziness, heavy sweating, nausea, and weakness. Heat stroke—a medical emergency—is marked by confusion, a rapid pulse, high body temperature, and loss of consciousness. Anyone suspecting heat stroke should call emergency services immediately.
