INDIANA — Tax-exempt organizations across Indiana looking to educate the public on local history and architectural preservation have an upcoming deadline to apply for financial assistance.
Indiana Landmarks has partnered with Indiana Humanities to offer Historic Preservation Education Grants, providing awards of up to $3,000 for public educational initiatives centered on historic properties and preservation efforts. Applications for the current funding cycle are due by September 30, 2026.
Jointly funded by Indiana Landmarks and Indiana Humanities—with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities—the grant program is designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of historic structures throughout the state.
Eligible Projects and Formats
The grant initiative supports a broad range of community-focused formats. Funding can be applied toward traditional, in-person programming as well as digital productions. Eligible projects include:
- In-Person Events: Workshops, public lectures, guided walking or site tours, presentations, and reading/discussion series.
- Media & Print: Educational exhibits, walking tour brochures, booklets, curriculum plans, and film documentaries.
- Digital Outreach: Webinars, podcasts, online exhibits, and virtual historic site tours designed to expand public accessibility.
Organizers emphasize that funded projects must be open to the public at large and involve a historic preservation professional or expert during the planning and implementation phases.
Application Requirements and Deadlines
To be eligible for funding, applicants must be registered tax-exempt nonprofits, K-12 schools, colleges, public libraries, churches, or municipal government entities based in Indiana.
Key requirements for the grant include:
- Funding Amount: Up to $3,000 per awarded project.
- Matching Requirement: Applicants must demonstrate at least a 100% (one-to-one) match in cash or in-kind contributions.
- Project Timeline: Projects approved in the September round may begin after November 15, 2026, and must be completed within one year of notification.
