JASPER — A wagging tail and a calming presence have officially arrived at Deaconess Memorial Medical Center. The hospital has welcomed its newest four-legged team member: Bentley, a fully trained one-year-old English Cream Golden Retriever.
In his role as a certified therapy dog, Bentley will make regular rounds across patient care areas to visit patients, families, and staff members. His primary mission is to offer comfort, reduce anxiety, and provide emotional relief during high-stress moments in the medical setting.
Bentley’s addition to the medical center was made possible through the direct generosity of the hospital’s own staff. His acquisition, training, and integration were funded through ECHO (Employees Caring & Helping Others), the hospital’s internal employee giving program managed by the Memorial Medical Center Foundation.
“Bentley is a wonderful example of what can happen when caregivers come together to invest in one another and in the patients we serve,” said Deidra Church, Director of the Memorial Medical Center Foundation. “Every gift made through ECHO reflects a commitment to making Deaconess Memorial Medical Center an even more compassionate place.”

The therapy dog program is developed and overseen by the Deaconess Police Department, whose team manages training, safety compliance, and day-to-day implementation to ensure a smooth transition into hospital operations.
Interactions with therapy animals are well-documented to deliver tangible health benefits in clinical environments. Studies show that petting a dog can trigger the release of calming hormones like oxytocin, lower cortisol levels, and reduce blood pressure—helping ease pre-procedure jitters for patients and providing a mental reset for healthcare workers during demanding shifts.
