RANDOLPH COUNTY – The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department has requested the Indiana State Police investigate a pursuit that ended in the death of the Lynn Town Marshal.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 8:30 a.m., a Randolph County Sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle that matched the description of a reported stolen vehicle in the area of County Road 400 W and County Road 50 South. The deputy also identified the driver as an individual who had active felony warrants.
The deputy activated emergency lights in an attempt to initiate a high-risk traffic stop. The driver fled from the deputy, leading deputies on a pursuit that ended up eastbound on US 36 approaching the town of Lynn.
As the pursuit approached Lynn, the Lynn Town Marshal Bradley Fisher positioned himself ahead of the pursuit in an attempt to deploy a tire deflation device to safely bring the pursuit to an end. During the attempt to deploy the deflation device, the suspect vehicle struck Marshal Fisher.
The suspect vehicle continued eastbound after the collision before the driver lost control and struck a dump truck, bringing the pursuit to an end.
Lynn Town Marshal Bradley Fisher, a 27-year veteran with the Lynn Police Department, was transported to Ascension St. Vincent Randolph Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained from the collision.
The driver of the van, identified as Maci Marquelle Atkinson, 34, of Winchester, was taken into custody at the scene and transported to Ascension St. Vincent Randolph Hospital for treatment. After being treated and released, Atkinson was transported to the Randolph County Jail, where she is currently being held on the felony warrant. Additional criminal charges are expected pending the outcome of the Indiana State Police investigation.
The Indiana State Police was assisted at the scene by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, Winchester Police Department, Lynn Volunteer Fire Department, and Randolph County EMS.
The investigation remains active. No further information will be released at this time.
