WASHINGTON — Marking eight decades of service to southwestern Indiana, the Daviess County Family YMCA announced it has surpassed $10.8 million in pledges toward a $32 million capital campaign to build a brand-new, state-of-the-art community facility.
The announcement was delivered during the YMCA’s 80th Birthday Bash celebration in Washington, unveiling plans for a modern health and community hub slated to break ground in 2027.
The proposed development—targeted for the Allen Field grounds—will nearly triple the size of the existing YMCA building, addressing growing local demand for wellness facilities, childcare, and civic meeting spaces.
Key amenities planned for the new YMCA complex include:
- Aquatics Center: Two indoor swimming pools alongside an interactive splash area for families.
- Fitness & Recreation: A comprehensive, modern fitness center, indoor walking/running track, climbing wall, and multi-use sports courts.
- Community & Youth Hub: Dedicated community meeting spaces, a teaching kitchen for nutrition education, and expanded spaces for before- and after-school childcare programs.
Public-Private Partnership & $1 Million Matching Challenge
The $32 million endeavor reflects significant backing from local government, private corporations, and area residents:
- Local Government Commitments: The City of Washington and Daviess County leadership have backed the project, with Daviess County Commissioners recently approving a letter of intent pledging up to $5 million toward the project ($4 million upfront with an option for an additional $1 million).
- Community Fundraising: Local community fundraising drives have added nearly $6 million in pledges from area residents and businesses.
- $1 Million Matching Grant: Campaign leaders announced a major incentive for future donors—an anonymous contributor has pledged to match gifts of $10,000 or more, dollar-for-dollar, up to $1 million. Pledges can be fulfilled over five years.
“This project is intended to build a facility that’s going to service the community 20 years from now when the community is thriving,” noted local officials during campaign updates, calling the project a “generational investment” for Daviess County families.
YMCA directors emphasize that expanding physical space is vital to meeting the county’s growing needs for day care, senior fitness, and youth athletic programming.
