COLUMBUS — Cummins Inc. has announced plans to implement a “measured production ramp” for its newest engine lines beginning next year, while continuing to manufacture and sell legacy models to ensure a smooth transition for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and commercial fleet customers.
The Columbus-based engine manufacturing giant confirmed it will utilize implementation flexibilities offered in recently proposed emissions regulations by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to execute a gradual rollout of its next-generation HELM™ platform X10 and X15 engines during the 2027 model year.
Aligning Product Strategy with EPA Flexibility
The company’s phased rollout plan follows a detailed review of proposed adjustments to upcoming federal emissions rules.
Company officials stated that the measured strategy is designed to maintain strict regulatory compliance, align with customer vehicle production schedules, and provide additional time to ramp up manufacturing in a disciplined manner.
“Our long-term product strategy has not changed,” said Jennifer Rumsey, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Cummins Inc. “This is about improving the transition, not changing the destination. A phased production ramp will allow us to support customers while building confidence in our new products through real-world operation and maintaining our focus on quality.”
Production Timeline & Legacy Model Availability
Cummins plans to begin limited production of both the Model Year 2027 X10 and X15 engines in January 2027, progressing toward full manufacturing capacity in stages:
- X10 Engines: Limited production begins in January 2027, with full production expected by the third quarter of 2027 based on OEM launch timelines.
- X15 Engines: Limited production begins in January 2027, ramping up to full production in the fourth quarter of 2027.
- Legacy Availability: To prevent supply disruptions, the current-generation X15 engine will remain available alongside the new platform during the transition. Similarly, the current X12 and L9 engines used in heavy trucks and transit buses will stay in production as the X10 ramps up.
- Medium-Duty B Platform: Cummins reaffirmed that its next-generation B platform remains on track to launch in January 2028, with the current B6.7 engine remaining fully available through 2027.
