DAVIESS COUNTY — A chaotic series of early morning structure fires kept local firefighters battling blazes across the west side of Washington on Wednesday, July 8, prompting call-outs for off-duty personnel and drawing investigators from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Crews were kept continuously busy between midnight and 2:00 a.m., responding to three separate structure fires scattered across the city’s west end.
The first call came in shortly after midnight in the 1500 block of Vincennes Avenue. Upon arrival, first responders encountered a detached garage and an adjacent residential home, both heavily engulfed in flames. The intensity of the blaze required callback support from off-duty Washington firefighters to help contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading further into the neighborhood.
Less than two hours later, while crews were still managing the initial scene, dispatchers received reports of a second structure fire near Northwest 19th Street and Maxwell Avenue. Neighbors and witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud, possible explosion moments before spotting visible flames erupting from the structure.
Around the same timeframe, a third structure fire was reported on the city’s west side, stretching available firefighting resources and equipment across multiple scenes.
Arson Investigators Called as Police Track Suspicious Person
Due to the rapid succession and close geographical proximity of the blazes, local authorities immediately notified the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office. Arson investigators were requested on-scene to help determine the origin points and cause.
Meanwhile, law enforcement officers initiated a search of the surrounding neighborhoods following reports from witnesses who observed a suspicious individual fleeing the scene near Northwest 19th Street and Maxwell Avenue shortly after the explosion occurred.
Authorities have not officially stated whether the three overnight fires are connected. All three incidents remain actively under investigation by local police, the Washington Fire Department, and state fire investigators.
Anyone with private security camera footage or details regarding suspicious activity on the city’s west side between midnight and 2:30 a.m. is urged to contact the Washington Police Department or the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s confidential tip line.
