Counterfeiting arrest made after investigation into forged documents

DECATUR – A months-long counterfeiting investigation has resulted in criminal charges being filed in Adams County against a former Adams County Deputy.

The investigation originated from a reported Homeowners Association violation involving forged and fraudulent documents submitted to the Decatur Building and Zoning Department. Once Adams County Sheriff Dan Mawhorr was notified of the incident, he notified the Indiana State Police and asked for a thorough investigation into the matter. During the course of the Indiana State Police investigation, evidence was collected indicating that official documentation had been falsified.

Upon completion of the investigation, all findings were forwarded to a special prosecutor for review to determine whether criminal charges were warranted.

On Monday, charges of counterfeiting were formally filed, and Daniel Girard, 39, of Decatur, has turned himself in to the Adams County Jail on those charges. Girard was a Deputy with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department at the time the incident occurred.
