PAOLI — As part of the ongoing national semiquincentennial celebrations, residents will have the opportunity to experience a foundational piece of American history right on the steps of the local government seat.
The Orange County America 250 Committee will host a ceremonial public reading of the Declaration of Independence this week.

The community event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the historic Orange County Courthouse in Paoli.
The timing of the event holds deep historical significance. While the Continental Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, it was four days later, on July 8, 1776, that the document was first read publicly to a crowd gathered in the state house yard in Philadelphia, accompanied by the ringing of bells and public cheers.
Organizers intend for this ceremonial reading to mirror that original tradition, honoring the courage, sacrifice, and enduring ideals upon which the nation was founded.
Event Program and Highlights
The gathering is designed as a family-friendly, patriotic assembly for guests and community members across the region. According to “Declaration.jpg”, the evening’s program will feature several distinct segments:
- Opening Ceremonies: Kicking off the evening with traditional patriotic protocol.
- Historical Reflection: Contextualizing the gravity of the events of 1776 and the regional impact of the revolutionary era.
- Joint Reading of the Declaration: A community-wide, collective recitation of the historic text, concluding with its famous closing vow: “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”
- Patriotic Fellowship: An opportunity for neighbors and guests to connect and celebrate the national milestone together.
All area residents, families, and visitors are warmly welcome to attend the free presentation. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to secure seating on the courthouse lawn.
