National Salmonella outbreak linked to Moringa Supplements reaches 119 cases; Multiple brands recalled

INDIANA — A rapidly expanding multistate Salmonella outbreak tied to moringa leaf powder in dietary supplements has now reached 119 confirmed cases and 32 hospitalizations across 36 states.

Federal investigators with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have traced the source of the contamination back to a single imported raw ingredient: moringa leaf powder used by multiple major supplement manufacturers. Because the same contaminated raw material was distributed to different brands, the recall list has already expanded three times since May, and officials warn that additional lots may still be added as the investigation continues.

While no deaths have been reported, the CDC notes that actual case counts are likely significantly higher than those that have been officially confirmed. Furthermore, Washington State health officials have flagged a parallel investigation involving a highly concerning, drug-resistant Salmonella strain linked to the outbreak that does not respond to standard, first-line antibiotics.

Symptoms to Watch For

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, frail or elderly individuals, and others with weakened immune systems.

Anyone who has experienced symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or severe abdominal cramps after consuming a moringa supplement should contact their healthcare provider immediately and request a Salmonella stool culture.
