Monroe County Emergency Management June 17th Tornado Response Update as of June 25th

MONROE COUNTY – An EF-2 tornado impacted several areas within the northwestern and northeastern parts of Monroe County on the evening of Wednesday, June 17th.

The tornado caused extensive damage to trees and houses throughout its path. The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-2 tornado traveled approximately 15.35 miles with wind speeds of 130 mph within the northwestern and northeastern parts of the county.

Potential Financial Assistance for Uninsured and Underinsured:
For anyone impacted and determined to be uninsured or underinsured, the Indiana State Disaster Relief Fund is open for applications. Qualifying residents can apply at https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/1ff14bd335c44c50bae1978f4953fbcd.

Uninsured or underinsured residents who qualify after submitting an application could potentially receive some financial assistance through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.

American Red Cross Assistance:
Any impacted resident can call the American Red Cross hotline at 1-800-733-2767 for American Red Cross assistance, such as assistance with lost or damaged prescriptions and medical equipment, and obtaining supplies such as cleanup kits and basic hygiene essentials.

Debris Cleanup and Disposal:
Residents affected by this tornado are responsible for their own debris cleanup. Monroe County government will be providing dumpsters at set locations to help residents with their cleanup efforts.

There will be three locations identified within the tornado path where there will be dumpsters made available for impacted residents to dispose of house and construction debris only. The dumpsters will be available for a period of two weeks, beginning today, June 25th, and ending on Wednesday, July 8th.

The county continues to request that property owners avoid putting tree and vegetation debris at the curb, as curbside pickup will not be available.

The dumpster locations are as follows:

  • Liberty Church – 9721 N. Liberty Hollow Rd, Gosport, IN
  • Mt. Pleasant Church – 3100 W. Burma Rd, Gosport, IN (in gravel lot by graveyard)
  • Area on Forest Road and Old State Road 37 at the Morgan-Monroe State Forest Entrance
