LAKE COUNTY – Wednesday afternoon at approximately 1:50 p.m., troopers responded to a report of shots being fired from one vehicle toward another on the I-65 northbound ramp to I‑80 eastbound. The 911 caller stated that the driver of a Honda Civic had fired a shot at her vehicle, shattering one of the windows. Troopers located the victim on the ramp to Central Avenue. The suspect had stopped on I‑80 just before the ramp to Central Avenue.
The victim sustained minor injuries from the shattered glass but was not struck by gunfire. Responding troopers detained the driver of the Honda until detectives arrived. A loaded FN Five‑seveN 5.7×28 handgun was recovered from the vehicle. During the investigation, detectives determined that the incident stemmed from a road rage encounter that occurred while both vehicles were traveling northbound on I‑65.
The suspect, Gavin J. McCammon, 23, of Lake Village, Indiana, was taken into custody and transported to the Lake County Jail. He is preliminarily being held on a charge of Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, a Level 5 Felony. Final charges will be determined by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
This is the second road rage incident in the last two weeks on Northwest Indiana interstate highways. The Indiana State Police would like to remind motorists to use good judgment if they become involved in a road rage situation. Slow down, do not retaliate if someone cuts you off or drives aggressively, and call 911. Do your best to drive safely and avoid engaging with the other driver. Rash decisions, choosing to retaliate, or the use of a weapon during a road rage incident can have tragic consequences.
