Obituary: James M. Flynn

April 5, 1936 – June 18, 2026

James M. Flynn, 90, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Bell Trace Health & Living in Bloomington.

Born April 5, 1936, in Bedford, he was the son of Jesse and Gladys (Covey) Flynn. James married Shelby J. Galyan in 1954, and she preceded him in death on August 9, 2018.

James was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran and a truck driver for Crulo Trucking. He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post #33 and Mt. Pleasant Christian Church. He loved people and enjoyed having conversations with everyone.

He is survived by a son, Danny (Connie) Flynn of Bedford; a daughter, Tammy (Jack) Helton of Florida; five grandchildren, Michael (Mellissa) Flynn, Amanda (Tristan) Simmerman, Brandon (Stacey) Helton, Whitney (Grant) Peters, Brandi (Tim) Smith, eleven great-grandchildren, Decker Pope, Peyton Simmerman, Jacob (Rylee) Simmerman, Jacey Simmerman, Danielle Flynn, Cassandra Flynn, Jayda Rife Smith, Jack Helton, Owen Peters, Poppy Peters, Jayce Mikels; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shelby, his parents, and seven siblings: Joe, Mack, Hubert, Mary Lou, Sue, Diane, and Nancy.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, June 23rd, in the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary, with Pastor Jeff Huddelson officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Gillen Post #33. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 22nd, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service, at Day & Carter Mortuary.
