Lawrence County bridge projects ahead of schedule; Paving delayed by recent rains

BEDFORD Work is progressing steadily on two key bridge rehabilitation projects in Lawrence County, putting them on track for an early completion.

Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brian Sowder

Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Brian Sowder announced during a Tuesday morning meeting that crews are making significant headway on the bridges located on Stars Boulevard and Boone Hollow Road. Both structures are currently on schedule, with officials expressing optimism that they may be completed ahead of their projected deadlines.

According to the Lawrence County Highway Department, both bridges are being hydro-blasted this week. Hydro-blasting utilizes high-pressure water to clean and prep the infrastructure by removing deteriorated concrete and contaminants without damaging the healthy structure underneath. Following the completion of this process, crews will begin laying brand-new concrete decks on both bridges.

Weather Delays Paving, Chip and Seal Moves Forward

While bridge work is moving forward rapidly, other county infrastructure projects have hit a minor snag. Sowder reported that county paving operations are currently running behind schedule due to recent bouts of heavy rainfall across Southern Indiana. Asphalt paving requires dry conditions for proper adherence and durability, forcing crews to wait out the wet weather.

Despite the paving delays, the highway department is maximizing its resources elsewhere. District crews continue to move forward with chip and seal maintenance across various county roads to preserve existing surfaces and seal out moisture.

The Lawrence County Highway Department oversees the maintenance of approximately 675 miles of county roads and 128 bridges. Motorists are advised to utilize caution and watch for flaggers when traveling near active work zones on Stars Boulevard, Boone Hollow Road, and wherever chip and seal operations are underway.
