BEDFORD — A physical alteration near the courthouse has left a Springville teenager on home detention after law enforcement intervened in an active fight and uncovered illegal substances.
On Monday afternoon, Lawrence County court security officers overheard shouting and observed two males engaged in a physical fight near 17th Street and J Street, right behind the courthouse plaza. The security officers immediately intervened, broke up the altercation, and placed both individuals in handcuffs before calling for backup.
Officer J. Landon Jones of the Bedford Police Department arrived on the scene shortly after to assist. He recognized one of the individuals involved as a male juvenile from prior law enforcement interactions.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the physical confrontation stemmed from a domestic argument inside a vehicle.
Officer Duprey of the Bedford Police Department spoke with the juvenile’s father. The father stated that he was transporting the teenager in his personal vehicle when the two became locked in a heated verbal argument. The father pulled the vehicle over near 17th and J streets and requested that the youth exit the car.
Upon exiting, the juvenile allegedly approached the front driver’s side door, pulled it open, and struck his father on the left side of his face. The father later confirmed to officers that he had been struck once, noting that the blow did not cause him lasting pain.
Following the initial intervention, Officer Jones escorted the juvenile to a patrol vehicle to conduct a search incident to arrest.
Inside the teenager’s pocket, Officer Jones discovered a black vape pen containing a wax-like substance. Based on training and field experience, officers suspected the material to be marijuana. A subsequent chemical field test conducted at the Bedford Police Department yielded a positive result for marijuana. The vape was packaged, labeled, and secured in an evidence locker.
The juvenile was taken to police headquarters, where authorities contacted Lawrence County Probation Officer Connie Bailey.
Following a review of the incident, Bailey requested that the juvenile be transferred to her office to be processed for immediate home detention. Custody of the minor was subsequently transferred to probation officials.
The teenager now faces preliminary juvenile delinquency allegations of domestic battery and possession of marijuana.
The youth was immediately placed on home detention, equipped with electronic monitoring.
All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This article is based on the information provided in the probable cause affidavit and does not represent a final determination of guilt or innocence.
