INDIANAPOLIS – The U.S. Census Bureau recently released statewide totals for building permits issued in April, and shows 1,900 single-family permits were pulled.
The 1,900 permits pulled in April of 2026 are up 4% from the 1,824 permits pulled in March of 2026. This number is down 6% from April of 2025, when 2,019 permits were pulled. The single-family permit numbers (6,194) for 2026 are down 4% compared to the first four months of 2025 (6,460).
“Indiana’s April permit numbers demonstrate the continued strength and resilience of our home building industry. While permits were down slightly compared to April of last year, the increase from March is an encouraging sign as we move into the heart of the spring building season,” said Rick Wajda, IBA CEO. “Indiana continues to lead the Midwest in single-family permit activity, reflecting the strong demand for housing across our state. Builders remain committed to addressing Indiana’s housing needs, but continued efforts to reduce regulatory barriers, increase housing affordability, and expand workforce development opportunities will be critical to ensuring we can meet future demand.”
Indiana continues to lead the Midwest in single-family housing growth, outpacing neighboring states including Ohio (1,742), Michigan (1,466), Illinois (1,039), and Kentucky (858). With 1,900 single-family permits pulled in April, Indiana continues to lead in permit numbers in the Midwest.
