BEDFORD — Regional health officials are urging local residents to step up immediately as an alarming drop in scheduled blood donations threatens to destabilize the regional supply heading into the volatile summer months.

The American Red Cross issued an urgent appeal Monday morning, citing a sharp decline in recent weeks due to the typical onset of summer travel, end-of-school festivities, and seasonal breaks. Compounding the situation is the June 1 start of the Atlantic hurricane season, which brings the perennial threat of severe weather that can abruptly disrupt or cancel vital collection drives across the nation.
To incentivize participation during this critical window, the Red Cross is offering significant rewards. All individuals who present to donate between June 1 and June 28, 2026, will receive a $15 electronic gift card to a merchant of their choice. Additionally, donors will automatically be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of two $7,500 grand prize gift cards.

Eligible donors can streamline their appointment by using the RapidPass system to complete pre-donation reading and health questionnaires online on the day of their drive. Appointments can be secured via RedCrossBlood.org, by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or through the Red Cross Blood Donor App.
