ODON — WestGate Academy is officially launching its 2026 Summer Intern Programming Series on June 4, establishing a robust professional development and networking pipeline for students working within southern Indiana’s expanding tech hub.
The initiative is tailored specifically for students currently completing internships at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) and various private entities operating out of the adjacent WestGate@Crane Technology Park.

Organizers state that the program’s primary objective is to cultivate early, meaningful relationships between emerging collegiate talent and regional employers, while showcasing the long-term career pathways available in southern Indiana’s defense and innovation ecosystems.
The program operates with significant industrial backing. Support from organizations like the National Security Technology Accelerator (NSTXL)—which serves as the consortium manager for Crane’s premier rapid contracting vehicle, $S^2MARTS$—helps power the initiative. The broader workforce strategy is built around demonstrating how high-level academic skills directly translate to real-world national security challenges.
Past iterations of the summer series have drawn upwards of 130 interns representing more than 22 universities across the country. To keep students engaged both professionally and socially, organizers pair rigorous technical discussions with community-building, out-of-office recreational events spanning multiple counties—including kayaking trips, local bowling nights, and group excursions to Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari.
The 2026 Curriculum Schedule
As outlined in the official document, WESTGATE@Crane, the series consists of five core afternoon sessions. Every bi-weekly event follows a strict timeline, taking place from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and concludes with dedicated time for informal networking, refreshments, and interactive games.
- June 4 | Defense Engineering 101: Mission, Systems + Impact: The series kicks off with a high-level, unclassified overview of how engineering efforts support national defense. Interns will receive insights into systems thinking, cross-ecosystem collaboration, and where emerging engineers can contribute meaningful value.
- June 17 | Career Paths in Defense: This session introduces interns to professionals operating at different stages of their careers. Special emphasis will be placed on speakers who successfully transitioned from temporary student internships into permanent, full-time defense sector roles.
- July 2 | Technical Communication: A professional development workshop focusing on the tangible tools required to stand out in a competitive job market. Topics will cover resume best practices, optimizing a professional LinkedIn presence, interview preparation, and mock interview exercises.
- July 16 | Innovation in Defense Engineering: A forward-looking forum exploring the emerging disruptive technologies shaping the future of national security. Discussions will zero in on critical modern focus areas, including microelectronics, electromagnetic warfare, and expeditionary warfare.
- July 23 | Life Beyond the Job: Community, Lifestyle + Staying Local: The final session pivots away from the lab to focus on regional retention. Presenters will explore the community, recreation, and work-life balance realities of building a permanent career and life in Southern Indiana.
A major draw of the programming series is the direct access it grants young academics to high-ranking defense executives. Past panels have featured notable agency leaders, including Dr. Angie Lewis, Technical Director of NSWC Crane, and Therron Thomas of the Crane Army Ammunition Activity (CAAA). These industry figures share firsthand insights into how shared priorities and collaborative innovation drive national mission impact.
By providing students with an immersive look at technologies like trusted microelectronics and hypersonics, the regional pipeline ensures that the next generation of problem solvers remains anchored right here in Indiana.
