Indiana gas prices plummet 25 cents in a week, dropping well below national average

INDIANA— Hoosier motorists are finding significant relief at the pump this week as average gasoline prices in Indiana plummeted 25.5 cents per gallon over the last seven days.

According to the latest GasBuddy survey of 3,271 stations across the state, the average price for regular unleaded sits at $3.65 per gallon today.

The massive weekly drop caps off an even more staggering monthly decline. Indiana pump prices are now a full $1.20 per gallon lower than they were just one month ago. However, due to long-term market pressures, drivers are still paying 59.2 cents per gallon more than they were at this same time last year.

Indiana’s sharp decline has pushed the state’s average well below the national baseline. Mechanically, the national average price of gasoline fell 19.5 cents per gallon over the past week, averaging $4.26 per gallon today. That figure is pulled from GasBuddy data spanning more than 11 million weekly price reports across 150,000 stations nationwide.

Within Indiana, the price variance between individual retail stations remains stark. Yesterday, a massive $2.08 per gallon spread separated the lowest and highest recorded prices in the state:

  • Cheapest Indiana Station: $3.01 per gallon
  • Most Expensive Indiana Station: $5.09 per gallon

Regionally, Indianapolis drivers are seeing some of the best metropolitan pricing, outpacing neighboring major markets:

Five-Year Historical Perspective

While today’s prices are significantly higher than the historic lows seen during the pandemic recovery, they represent a drastic improvement from the peak energy crisis spikes seen four years ago.

Diesel Prices Follow Downward Trend

The relief hasn’t been restricted purely to passenger vehicles. The national average price of diesel dropped by 15.5 cents over the last week, settling in at $5.437 per gallon. This brings welcome operational relief to the commercial trucking and agricultural sectors, which have heavily absorbed high diesel overhead costs for months.

Patrick De Haan

According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, all 50 states saw a decline over the last week. GasBuddy is currently tracking 15 states where the average price has safely dipped below the $4.00 mark.

“Much of the decline was driven by falling oil prices and the unwinding of recent price cycles, as growing optimism surrounding a potential U.S.-Iran agreement helped ease concerns over global oil supplies,” De Haan noted.

Despite the current relief, experts warn that the downward trend could be short-lived. Crude oil prices began ticking higher on Sunday evening due to persistent uncertainty surrounding international trade negotiations and renewed geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East, which inject sudden risk back into global supply chains.

Furthermore, retail mechanics could force prices back up locally. In states prone to aggressive “price-cycling,” retailers who have slashed margins to the bone will eventually run out of room to lower prices further, often resulting in a sharp, coordinated upward correction.

“Overall, any setback in negotiations could quickly reverse the recent decline in fuel prices,” De Haan warned.
