Obituary: Harriett Cummings

May 2, 1947 – May 26, 2026

Harriett was born on May 2, 1947, in Cedar Hill, Kentucky, and spent the majority of her life in Oolitic, Indiana.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, Larry Dwight Cummings, and their three daughters: Laurie Doehass-Imel (Jason) of Oregon, Shanno Astrike (Derek) of Rhodes, Michigan, and Natisha Cuellar (Richard Jr.) of Zionsville, Indiana. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren — Taylor Drew, Nolan, Lauren, Lexi, Shane, Alex, Rylie, and Collin — as well as three great-grandchildren.

She is also survived by her two lifelong friends: Margaret Rigg and Pauline Rowe.

Harriett was deeply devoted to her family and was her girls’ biggest fan, no matter the challenge — whether on the court, in the classroom, or in life. She was always loving and supportive, encouraging them to chase their dreams

Known lovingly as “Mammy” to her children and grandchildren, Harriett lived each day to the fullest and always put family first. She traveled many miles to spend time with her grandchildren, not only watching them grow but also holding their hands, playing with them, and creating lasting memories. She was always there with a warm hug and a loving tuck-in at bedtime.

Harriett was a longtime member of Oolitic Baptist Church, where she previously served as a deacon and Bible school committee member. She was dedicated to her church family and was always willing to help neighbors and friends in need.

Her generosity and willingness to share her time and talents touched many lives. She had many talents and could accomplish just about anything she set her mind to. Harriett was passionate about cooking, gardening, sewing, crafting, painting, playing games and cards, traveling, and visiting extended family in Kentucky.

Harriett will be greatly missed. She will be remembered for her generosity, intentional acts of kindness, and her “can-do” spirit. She loved the Lord deeply and is now at peace. Her family looks forward to the day they will reunite with her again in Heaven.
