Indiana highlights free fishing days and scenic waterways for National Fishing & Boating Week

INDIANA The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is inviting Hoosiers to celebrate National Fishing and Boating Week by exploring the state’s vast network of lakes, rivers, and streams.

This year’s celebration runs from June 6 through June 14, anchoring a week of events designed to encourage beginners and experienced outdoorsmen alike to enjoy Indiana’s public waterways. Whether you plan to cast a line for the first time, take a relaxing pontoon ride, or paddle a scenic river trail, state officials are highlighting several free tools and resources to help plan the perfect summer excursion.

No License Required: Free Fishing Days Set for June 6–7

The headline event of the week is Indiana’s annual Free Fishing Days, taking place on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7.

On these two specific days, Indiana residents can fish any public water across the state without having to purchase a fishing license or a trout/salmon stamp. While the license requirement is temporarily waived to make participation easy for families and newcomers, all other standard bag limits, size restrictions, and fishing regulations remain strictly in effect.

Free Digital Mapping Tools for Summer Planning

To make exploring Indiana’s waters more accessible, the DNR offers two primary interactive mapping resources for trip planning:

  • The “Where to Fish” Map: A digital tool that helps anglers locate boat ramps, public access sites, shore-fishing locations, and fish stocking histories. Additional fishing tips, upcoming regional events, and beginner tutorials can be found on the DNR’s dedicated Fishing Resources webpage.
  • The “Where to Paddle” Map: Tailored for kayakers, canoeists, and paddleboarders, this map identifies the nearest launch sites and access points along Indiana’s officially designated scenic water trails.

Critical Safety Guidelines for Boaters and Paddlers

With an influx of water traffic expected throughout the week, the DNR is reminding all participants to prioritize safety. Conservation Officers emphasize that preparation before leaving the boat ramp is the best way to prevent accidents.
