BEDFORD — A long-standing summer tradition in Lawrence County is getting a major makeover. Organizers of the Limestone Heritage Festival have announced sweeping changes designed to highlight local history while aligning with the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday celebration.

Nathan Watson, representing Bedford Revitalization, Inc. (BRI), appeared before the Lawrence County Commissioners on Tuesday morning. Watson successfully sought permission to utilize the courthouse square and J Street for the upcoming festivities, locking in the official logistics for the revamped event.
BRI, which hosts the annual event, revealed that the reimagined format will begin this year. The changes aim to both honor Bedford’s identity as the “Limestone Capital of the World” and connect the community to the broader celebration of America’s semiquincentennial.
One of the most significant changes is the separation of the festival and its traditional parade.
The Limestone Heritage Festival will now take place on Saturday, June 6, 2026. Moving the event to the first Saturday in June allows it to serve as the official kickoff to “Limestone Month,” a statewide celebration of Indiana’s stone industry.
The Parade & Fireworks will move to July 4, 2026. The popular parade, previously held as part of the festival, will run during the day to coincide with Independence Day festivities marking the nation’s 250th anniversary. Fireworks will also shift entirely to the July 4th celebration.
The shift carries deep local significance; Watson noted that early June closely aligns with Bedford’s own 1976 bicentennial celebrations, reinforcing the connection between local heritage and national milestones.

The festival footprint will take over downtown Bedford, starting a day early to accommodate vendors.
On Friday, June 5, setup will begin on J Street, which will welcome a variety of local food trucks.
The main festival kicks off Saturday at 8:00 a.m. on the courthouse square and J Street and ends around 10 p.m.
Despite the structural changes, the festival will continue to offer many of the attractions that have made it a staple of the community calendar.
Attendees can look forward to:
- Live music and entertainment
- Food vendors and family-friendly activities
- Interactive stone-carving demonstrations
- Walking tours of Bedford’s historic limestone architecture
Traditionally held over two days in late June, the festival has long celebrated the region’s deep ties to limestone—a resource used in iconic structures across the United States and around the world.
Organizers say the updated format is intended to enhance both events. It allows the festival to focus more deeply on heritage and education in June, while giving the Independence Day parade a larger impact within a grand patriotic celebration.
Community members and visitors are encouraged to mark their calendars for both events as Bedford prepares to showcase its history, craftsmanship, and national significance in a brand-new way.
