WEST LAFAYETTE— Head coach Matt Painter and the Purdue men’s basketball program have made history on the recruiting trail.

Isaiah Hill, a dominant 7-foot, 210-pound five-star center from Pike High School in Indianapolis, officially announced his commitment to the Boilermakers. According to Sports Illustrated and major recruiting databases, Hill’s scouting evaluation marks him as the highest-rated recruit to ever commit to Purdue in the modern era.
Hill becomes only the second 5-star prospect to join the Boilermakers during Painter’s tenure, following in the footsteps of the late Caleb Swanigan, who committed to West Lafayette back in 2015.
Currently wrapping up a standout junior year at Pike, Hill is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 overall player in the state of Indiana and the No. 13 overall prospect nationally in the 2027 recruiting cycle. He chose Purdue over heavy pursuit from other elite programs, including Louisville, Notre Dame, and Indiana.
For Hill, the decision to head to West Lafayette heavily aligned with the program’s undeniable reputation for developing elite post players. Under Painter and assistant coach Brandon Brantley, Purdue has become the premier destination for traditional centers, a lineage that includes AJ Hammons, Isaac Haas, Caleb Swanigan, and back-to-back National Player of the Year Zach Edey.
“They’ve been recruiting me since I was in eighth grade,” Hill noted, emphasizing that the coaching staff’s long-term belief and track record of preparing big men for the NBA made Purdue the perfect fit.
Hill brings an elite defensive presence to the court. During his junior season, he averaged 12.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 4.6 blocks per game. His rim-protecting instincts were fully on display during the Marion County Tournament semifinals earlier this year, where he recorded a staggering triple-double featuring 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 blocked shots.
The Jeff Teague Connection and Regional Battle
At Pike High School, Hill has been developing under the guidance of former NBA All-Star and Pike alumnus Jeff Teague, who returned to lead his alma mater as head coach in 2023. Teague’s mentorship helped guide Hill and the Red Devils to an impressive 23-4 record this past winter.

Pike’s postseason run ultimately culminated in a thrilling, highly localized battle during the IHSAA Class 4A regional championship against Mt. Vernon.
The regional final set up a heavyweight matchup between Hill and Mt. Vernon’s star guard Luke Ertel—an incoming 2026 Purdue signee, Naismith High School All-American, and the leading candidate for Indiana Mr. Basketball. Ertel willed Mt. Vernon to a narrow 57-54 overtime victory by scoring 34 points, eventually leading his squad to a Class 4A state title.
While Ertel will enroll at Purdue later this summer as part of the 2026 freshman class, Boilermaker fans will only have to wait until the fall of 2027 to see Hill join him on the court in West Lafayette, solidifying a devastating inside-out tandem for Painter’s future squads.
