Izabelle Sears earns top 5 finish at Indiana Youth of the Year Competition, showcasing Lawrence County leadership

BEDFORD — Member and staff mentor Izabelle Sears has earned statewide recognition after finishing among the top five finalists in 2026.

Sears represented Lawrence County at the annual statewide competition after being selected earlier this year as the local club’s 2026 Youth of the Year.

Ashley Gilstrap, director of resource development for the club, said Sears distinguished herself among 18 competitors from across Indiana.

“Izzy finished in the top five out of 18 participants,” Gilstrap said. “She represented Lawrence County well and certainly made us all proud.”

The Youth of the Year program is the premier youth recognition initiative, celebrating teens who demonstrate academic success, leadership, service, and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. State winners advance to regional competitions, with finalists ultimately competing for the national Youth of the Year title, considered one of the organization’s highest honors.

Participants in the program are evaluated on leadership ability, public speaking, community involvement, academic achievement, and personal essays detailing their experiences and future goals.

Gilstrap said Sears’ achievement is especially meaningful because of her longtime connection to the club.

“Izzy works at the after-school program at the Limestone Unit every school day, being a mentor for our Club kids to look up to,” Gilstrap said. “We are so proud of the leader she has grown into.”

According to the club, Sears has been involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County since kindergarten and now serves as a staff member, helping guide younger students through after-school programming and activities.

In a social media post following the competition, the club praised Sears for her leadership and growth through the organization.

“After being named our 2026 Youth of the Year, Izzy represented Lawrence County with confidence, leadership, and heart,” the post stated. “We are so proud of the young leader she has become and know this is only the beginning of all she will accomplish.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County provides after-school and youth development programming for children and teens throughout the county, offering academic support, mentoring opportunities, leadership development, and recreational activities designed to help young people reach their full potential.

Club officials said Sears’ success at the state competition reflects not only her personal dedication and leadership, but also the impact local youth programs can have in shaping future community leaders.
