A Rock-Solid Milestone: BRI updates Limestone Heritage Festival for America’s 250th Birthday

BEDFORD Bedford Revitalization, Inc. (BRI) announced major changes to the city’s traditional Limestone Heritage Festival on Thursday, including a high-profile move for its annual parade to align with the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026.

In a shift aimed at honoring both the local stone industry’s roots and national history, BRI officials confirmed that the downtown parade will move to July 4, 2026. The event will be held during the day to commemorate the semiquincentennial of the United States.

BRI President Nathan Watson

“We are happy to bring the parade back to the Fourth of July,” BRI President Nathan Watson said in a statement. “We wanted to honor our country’s milestone in a way that brings our community together, builds a partnership with the City of Bedford, and showcases Bedford’s unique contribution to American history through its limestone legacy.”

The festival itself is also seeing a change in its schedule. Starting in 2026, the Limestone Heritage Festival will be held on the first Saturday of June. The move is designed to coincide with Limestone Month, a statewide celebration of Indiana’s natural stone resources.

The early June date also holds local historical significance, as it mirrors the timing of Bedford’s 1976 Bicentennial festivities.

The revamped festival is expected to include live music, local food vendors, and interactive stone carving demonstrations. Educational exhibits and walking tours focused on the city’s historic limestone architecture are also planned.

While the parade will move to the Independence Day holiday, BRI noted that the June festival will depart from previous tradition by not including a concluding fireworks display.

Organizers are encouraging residents and history buffs to participate in both the June festival and the July parade to honor the city’s industrial past and the country’s future.
