Ghirardelli recalls 13 powdered beverage mixes over potential Salmonella Risk

INDIANA — The Ghirardelli Chocolate Company has launched a voluntary recall of 13 different powdered beverage mixes due to potential Salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.

The affected products include various hot cocoa and frappe mixtures primarily intended for food service and institutional use. While most were packaged in bulk, officials warned that some products may have been sold directly to consumers via online e-commerce platforms.

The recall was initiated after a supplier, California Dairies, Inc., recalled milk powder that was used as an ingredient in the Ghirardelli mixes. Although neither Ghirardelli nor its manufacturing partners have confirmed the presence of Salmonella in the finished beverage products, the company is moving forward with the recall out of an abundance of caution.

To date, no illnesses have been reported in connection with these products.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically include fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, which may be bloody.

The following 13 items are included in the national recall. These products generally carry expiration dates ranging from 2027 to early 2028.
