ISP details busy Little 500 Weekend enforcement: Pursuits, fatal crash, and shooting response

BLOOMINGTON The Indiana State Police (ISP) concluded a high-intensity enforcement detail over the “Little 500 Weekend,” deploying specialized units to manage massive crowds and maintain public safety across the Bloomington District.

Local troopers were bolstered by various ISP sections, including SWAT, Aviation, Drug Enforcement, and Collaborative Policing units.

Enforcement and Arrest Statistics

The weekend saw a significant volume of police activity aimed at safeguarding regional roads and addressing criminal behavior:

Troopers initiated 430 stops, resulting in 198 citations and 368 warnings.

Eight traffic stops led to operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) investigations and arrests.

Officers filed 29 criminal charges, including eight felonies.

Notable Incidents and Pursuits

Beyond traffic safety, troopers intervened in several high-priority criminal situations:

Officers engaged in a foot pursuit on North College Avenue and a vehicle pursuit on I-69, which spanned from the Third Street overpass to the 113-mile marker.

Troopers addressed trespassing at the Star Quarry on Dillman Road and conducted crowd assessments at multiple properties in Monroe and Lawrence Counties.

Illegal firearms were seized during the weekend operations.

Weekend Crises: Fatal Crash and Shooting

Tragedy struck the region on Saturday and Sunday, requiring extensive emergency responses.

Fatal I-69 Collision

A fatal crash occurred south of Martinsville at the 133-mile marker of I-69. A vehicle carrying five occupants came to a stop in the roadway and was struck by at least one other vehicle. The collision forced the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes. Three trauma victims were evacuated via medical helicopter to two Indianapolis hospitals.

State Road 45 Motorcycle Injury

Troopers investigated a personal injury crash involving a motorcycle on State Road 45. Investigators believe the crash was partially caused by heavy traffic congestion related to a large, unapproved event held at a nearby local park.

All traffic crashes from the weekend remain under active investigation, with toxicology results currently pending.

Kirkwood Avenue Shooting

Early Sunday morning, troopers patrolling downtown responded to the sound of gunfire near Kirkwood Avenue and Dunn Street. Members of the ISP SWAT and Aviation sections assisted the Bloomington Police Department in securing the crime scene and managing the large crowds in the area.

ISP officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining order and serving victims during one of the city’s busiest annual periods.
