One Week Left: Indiana Officials urge residents to register to vote before April 6 deadline

LAWRENCE COUNTY With the primary election cycle fast approaching, Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales and Lawrence County Clerk Amy Voorhies are issuing a final call to action for Hoosiers: you have exactly one week left to register to vote.

The deadline to register for the 2026 primary election is Monday, April 6.

Eligible citizens have until 11:59 p.m. on April 6 to complete their registration online at IndianaVoters.com. Those preferring to register in person must do so by the close of business at their respective county election offices on the same day.

“As a naturalized citizen and Indiana’s Chief Election Officer, voting is very personal to me,” said Secretary Diego Morales. “It is one of the most important rights we have as Americans. I encourage every eligible Hoosier who has not yet registered to vote to do so before the deadline.”

In Lawrence County, Clerk Amy Voorhies reminds residents that keeping voter information current is essential for a smooth experience at the polls. Residents can visit the clerk’s office to register in person, update their address, or confirm their precinct details.

If you miss the upcoming cutoff, you will not be eligible to vote in the primary, though registration will reopen later in the year.

Voter Eligibility Requirements

To participate in the upcoming election, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship: Must be a United States citizen.
  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day.
  • Residency: Must have lived in your specific precinct for at least 30 days before the election.

Know Before You Go: Vote Centers vs. Precincts

Indiana residents should be aware of how their specific county handles polling. Currently, 72 of Indiana’s 92 counties utilize a “Vote Center” model.

  • In Vote Center Counties: Registered voters can cast their ballot at any polling location within their county.
  • In Non-Vote Center Counties: Voters must report to their specifically assigned precinct location on Election Day.

While most “donut” counties surrounding Indianapolis use vote centers, Hamilton County remains a notable exception where voters must use assigned locations.

Check Your Status

Voters are encouraged to visit IndianaVoters.com and click “Check your registration record.” By entering your name and date of birth, you can view your registration status, find your polling location, and see a preview of the candidates who will appear on your specific ballot.

For those not yet registered, applications can be submitted online, at county election offices, or at any Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) branch.
