Investigation underway after fatal house fire on Strain Ridge Road

BLOOMINGTON — Authorities are investigating a tragic structure fire in southern Monroe County that claimed the life of a female resident Saturday afternoon.

Emergency crews were alerted to the blaze at approximately 2:51 p.m. on March 28, when Monroe County Central Emergency Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a fire at a home in the 7000 block of South Strain Ridge Road, near the Clear Creek area.

Units from the Monroe Fire Protection District (MFPD) and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene immediately. Upon arrival, firefighters began aggressive fire suppression efforts to contain the flames.

During the search of the residence, fire crews recovered a deceased female from inside the structure. No other injuries were reported at the scene.

While the fire caused significant damage to the home, investigators with the Monroe Fire Protection District stated that initial findings do not indicate foul play.

The Monroe County Coroner’s Office has taken jurisdiction over the remains. Officials noted that the victim’s name and the specific cause of death will be withheld until a formal identification is made and legal next of kin have been properly notified.

Fire marshals and detectives from the Sheriff’s Office are working together to determine the exact origin and cause of the fire. The investigation remains active as of Sunday morning.

This incident serves as a somber reminder for residents in rural parts of the county, where response times can be impacted by distance. The MFPD encourages all residents to:

  • Test Smoke Alarms: Ensure alarms are functioning on every level of the home.
  • Close Before You Doze: Keeping bedroom doors closed can slow the spread of fire and toxic smoke.
  • Clear Exits: Ensure that window and door exits are not blocked by furniture or debris.
