INDIANA — In a historic move for outdoor inclusivity, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced this week that it has become the national leader in trail accessibility. A new fleet of 45 all-terrain track chairs is being deployed to every Indiana State Park and State Park Inn, ensuring that rugged Hoosier landscapes are now accessible to everyone.

The initiative was celebrated on Tuesday at Fort Harrison State Park, where accessibility advocates joined DNR officials to witness the first ceremonial rides of the high-tech equipment.
What is a Track Chair?
Unlike traditional wheelchairs, a track chair utilizes industrial-grade treads—similar to those found on a tank or snowmobile—to navigate terrain that would otherwise be impassable.

Key Features of the New Fleet:
- All-Terrain Capability: Designed to handle mud, sand, snow, and steep inclines.
- Long Battery Life: Each chair carries an eight-hour charge, allowing for full-day excursions.
- Customizable Comfort: Features six adjustment points for armrests, torso width, and footrests to accommodate everyone from small children to full-grown adults.
- Versatility: Many units are equipped with outdoor accessories, including fishing rod holders and firearm mounts for hunting.
Funding and National Standing
The purchase was made possible by a $1 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., part of a larger $50 million investment in Indiana’s natural resources.
With the addition of these 45 units to the 13 existing powered mobility chairs, Indiana now boasts the largest state park track chair fleet in the United States.
“Nature is for everyone, and that includes the ability to enjoy the scenic trails at Indiana State Parks,” said Governor Mike Braun. “By making at least one track chair available at every state park, we’re opening miles of trail to more people statewide.”
How to Use a Track Chair
The chairs are completely free to use for guests with mobility disabilities. While the DNR plans to launch an online reservation system later this year, visitors can currently secure a chair through the following steps:
- Advance Booking: It is highly recommended to call the specific State Park office at least 24 hours in advance to ensure availability.
- First-Come, First-Served: On-site “walk-up” requests are also accepted if the chair is not already reserved.
- Training: Park staff will provide a brief safety orientation and training session before you head out.
- Defined Trails: To ensure safety, each park has identified specific “track chair-friendly” trails (such as Trails 1 and 2 at Salamonie Lake) where the terrain is appropriate for the equipment.
Mark Your Calendar: Free Admission Day
In addition to the new mobility resources, the DNR reminds the public that Sunday, May 3, 2026, is a Free Admission Day at all Indiana State Parks. This is an excellent opportunity for families to test out the new track chairs and explore the parks at no cost.
