Cherry blossoms bloom in White River State Park

INDIANAPOLIS – The Japanese Yoshino cherry blossom trees are blooming in White River State Park, signaling spring’s arrival. Indianapolis residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the park to see the annual blossom.

“The blooming of the Yoshino cherry trees are a welcome announcement that spring has arrived in the park. Whether you visit the trees every year or have yet to experience the bloom, this is a must-do spring activity in White River State Park,” said John Moton, Executive Director of White River State Park.

In 2012, Indianapolis was gifted 52 Yoshino cherry trees from Japan. The gift celebrated the 100th anniversary of the blooming of cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. and honors the enduring friendship between the United States and Japan.

The 52 cherry blossom trees can be found in White River State Park between the Indianapolis Zoo and the west bank of the White River. Visitors can park in the White River State Park parking garage, walk across the Old Washington Street Bridge and see the trees near Waterfront Pavilion.

The park is thankful to the Japan-America Society of Indiana (JASI) for furthering this partnership between the park, the state of Indiana, and Japan.

Blooms typically last 1-2 weeks. Hoosiers and visitors are encouraged to come to the park and see the cherry blossoms in full bloom before they are gone for the year. It is the perfect spot for family photos, a picnic, or a beautiful view of the trees in front of the downtown skyline.
