“The Great War” returns to Vincennes: Indiana Military Museum to host WWI Living History event

VINCENNES The sights and sounds of the early 20th century will return to Southwest Indiana next weekend as the Indiana Military Museum (IMM) hosts its annual World War I Living History event.

Scheduled for March 28 and 29, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, the event commemorates the “war to end all wars” through immersive reenactments and educational displays.

Visitors to the museum’s 14-acre complex at 715 South 6th Street can expect a full schedule of tactical demonstrations and educational programming. The event is designed to bring the history of the Western Front to life with high-level authenticity.

Key features of the event include:

  • Battle Reenactments: Reenactors representing both Allied and Central Powers will conduct skirmishes and tactical demonstrations throughout the weekend.
  • Artillery & Weapons Demos: Live demonstrations of WWI-era field pieces and small arms, including the museum’s rare collection of machine guns.
  • WWI Flyovers: Weather permitting, vintage aircraft are expected to perform flyover displays, a hallmark of the museum’s major seasonal events.
  • Military Vendors: Collectors and history buffs can browse a variety of military memorabilia, equipment, and period-accurate goods.

Museum Highlights and Rare Artifacts

The IMM is home to one of the most comprehensive private military collections in the United States. During the WWI event, several “crown jewels” of the collection will be on display, including:

  • The WWI Trench: An authentic, walk-through trench system that allows visitors to experience the claustrophobic reality of life on the front lines.
  • Rare French Renault Truck: A WWI-era sterilization truck believed to be the only one of its kind remaining in the world.
  • Historical Uniforms: Inside the museum’s main gallery, visitors can view the original service uniforms of General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vincennes’ own Red Skelton.
