New era for Lady Lions: Josh Franklin takes the reins of Loogootee softball

LOOGOOTEE — A transformative chapter is beginning for one of Southern Indiana’s most storied high school athletic programs. Josh Franklin has officially stepped in as the new head coach for the Loogootee Lady Lions softball team, succeeding longtime coach Greg Clark, who concluded a remarkable 25-year tenure at the helm.

Franklin’s path to the head-coaching role was rooted in a personal connection to the sport. He shared that his passion for softball ignited while coaching his daughter in youth leagues and competitive travel ball. That initial spark led to a deep study of the game’s nuances, ultimately driving him to pursue coaching at the high school level.

While Franklin acknowledged the “strong foundation” built by Clark—which includes a history of sectional titles and high-ranking state finishes—he is eager to implement his own strategic approach.

The 2026 Lady Lions feature a compelling blend of experience and emerging talent. Returning veterans like Brynn Lengacher and Jocelynn Sims are expected to lead a roster that also includes several new additions ready to make an immediate impact.

The “new era” isn’t limited to the coaching staff; the team’s home, Costello Field, is undergoing significant modernization:

  • Enhanced Lighting: New LED stadium lights have been installed, improving visibility during evening games.
  • Safety Upgrades: A new warning track is being added to improve safety and field conditions.
  • Playing Surface: Planned facility upgrades include a completely rebuilt infield, new bases, and renovated batter’s boxes.

These improvements were funded in part by a grant from the Loogootee School Foundation, reflecting the community’s investment in the program’s future.

Franklin emphasized that this season’s primary goals are growth and resilience. The team is focusing on rigorous preparation for postseason play, with its schedule kicking off on March 24 against rival North Daviess.

The Lady Lions will also face a challenging Blue Chip Conference slate, including matchups against Springs Valley, Barr-Reeve, and South Knox as they look to climb the Class 1A standings.
