Mitchell School Board to hire new football coach in special session

MITCHELL The Mitchell Community Schools Board of Trustees will convene for a special session on Thursday, March 26th, to finalize a key leadership role for the high school athletic department.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. at the Mitchell Community Schools Central Office, located at 441 North 8th Street.

According to the official agenda released by Board President Krystal Shetler, the session has one primary focus: the approval of the hiring of a new head football coach for the Mitchell Bluejackets.

The search for a new head coach began earlier this year after the position was officially posted by the Indiana Football Coaches Association with a February deadline. The incoming coach will take over a program that competes in the Patoka Lake Athletic Conference (PLAC) and IHSAA Class 2A.

The board’s decision comes at a critical time for the program. The new leader will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of Mitchell football, from the high school varsity squad to the junior high and youth feeder programs. According to the district’s job description, the administration was seeking a candidate with a “strong strategic plan” and a commitment to being a visible, active member of the Mitchell community.

The new hire will inherit a program supported by recent facility upgrades, including the installation of turf at Gary Seitzinger Field and access to the district’s fieldhouse and weight room.

While the 2025–26 season was a building year for the Bluejackets, the community remains deeply invested in the program’s success. The upcoming 2026 season will offer the new coach an opportunity to leverage a large group of returning underclassmen to climb the ranks of the PLAC.

Following the hiring approval, the coach is expected to be formally introduced to students and families in the coming weeks to begin off-season conditioning and spring preparations.
