BEDFORD — Local conservationists are inviting Lawrence County residents to transform their gardens into pollinator-friendly havens this spring. Lawrence County KIC – Keep Invasives in Check, the region’s dedicated invasive plant awareness group, has officially launched its annual Native Plant Sale, offering a variety of flowers specifically adapted to the Southern Indiana climate.

The sale is a direct effort to replace common invasive landscape plants with beautiful, non-invasive alternatives that support local honeybees, butterflies, and songbirds.
Featured Species: Anise Hyssop
This year, the Lawrence County Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) is spotlighting Anise Hyssop (Agastache foeniculum).

Known for its striking 3-foot-tall purple spikes, this perennial is a favorite for local gardeners because it:
- Blooms Long: Flowers typically last from June through September.
- Resists Pests: Its distinct licorice scent acts as a natural deterrent for deer.
- Attracts Wildlife: It is widely considered one of the best nectar-producing plants for pollinators in the Midwest.
How to Order
Because quantities are limited and certain species sell out quickly, organizers are urging residents to submit their requests as soon as possible.
Pick up an order form in person at the Lawrence County SWCD Office (1919 Steven Ave., Bedford) or download a full list of available species and prices online at lawrencecokic.weebly.com.
All order forms and payments must be received by Friday, March 27, 2026.
Purchased plants are scheduled to arrive in mid-May, just in time for the spring planting season.
According to KIC representatives, native plants are the foundation of a healthy ecosystem. Unlike exotic ornamentals, native species have deep root systems that help prevent soil erosion and require significantly less water and fertilizer once established.
For questions regarding specific species or order assistance, contact the Lawrence County SWCD at 812-279-8117 ext. 3.
