National Barbie Day celebrates 67 years of an American icon

INDIANA — March 9 marks the official celebration of National Barbie Day, a day dedicated to honoring the world’s most famous doll and her enduring impact on global culture since her debut in 1959.

Now nearly 70 years into her tenure as a toy aisle staple, Barbie remains more than just a plaything; she has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar brand and a symbol of changing societal aspirations.

Barbie Millicent Roberts made her first appearance at the American International Toy Fair in New York City on March 9, 1959. Created by Ruth Handler, co-founder of Mattel, the doll was inspired by Handler’s daughter, Barbara.

Handler noticed that her daughter often gave her baby dolls adult roles, like office worker or mother, and realized there was a gap in the market for a doll that allowed girls to imagine their future selves. Despite initial skepticism from male executives at Mattel, the first “Teen-age Fashion Model” Barbie—sporting her iconic black-and-white striped swimsuit and ponytail—sold 350,000 units in its first year.

A Resume Like No Other

Over the decades, Barbie has broken countless glass ceilings. While she is often associated with fashion, her professional history is remarkably diverse:

  • Astronaut (1965): Barbie went to the moon four years before Neil Armstrong.
  • CEO (1985): She led the boardroom during the “Power Suit” era.
  • Presidential Candidate (1992): She has “run” for office in almost every election cycle since the early 90s.
  • Inclusion and Diversity: In recent years, the Barbie Fashionistas line has expanded to include dolls with varying body types, skin tones, and disabilities, including dolls with vitiligo, hearing aids, and wheelchairs.

Barbie’s relevance reached a fever pitch in 2023 with the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie. The film became a global phenomenon, grossing over $1.4 billion at the box office and sparking a worldwide “Barbiecore” fashion trend characterized by vibrant shades of pink.

The film’s success proved that the brand could navigate complex modern conversations about womanhood while maintaining its nostalgic appeal for older generations.
