BLOOMINGTON — Local service organizations are issuing an urgent call for community support as they move through the 2026 spring season. Wheeler Mission and Beacon have announced several critical volunteer openings and donation needs to help sustain essential services for Bloomington’s most vulnerable residents.
Wheeler Mission: Hands-On Support Needed
Wheeler Mission, South-Central Indiana’s largest shelter provider, is currently looking for individuals and groups to fill three primary service roles at its Bloomington campus:
- Meal Service: Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner to shelter guests.
- Sack Meal Assembly: A vital service for guests who are employed and away from the shelter during traditional meal times.
- Front Desk Support: Providing a welcoming face for those entering the facility and assisting staff with administrative tasks.
Beacon: Spring Volunteer Shifts Available
Beacon is also seeking community members to assist with their spring operations. The organization has identified specific gaps in its schedule for the following roles:

Shalom Center: Urgent Item Donations
For those who wish to contribute but are unable to donate their time, the Shalom Center has released a “high-priority” list of items needed for immediate distribution. Due to fluctuating spring temperatures, the following items are in high demand:
- Hot Hands (hand warmers)
- Gloves
- Deodorant
Donations can be delivered directly to the center at 620 S. Walnut St. during operating hours.
Interested residents can sign up for volunteer shifts or fill out an official application by visiting the City of Bloomington Volunteer Network.
As part of the city’s “Be The Change” 100,000 Volunteer Hours Challenge for 2026, every hour logged helps the community reach a record-breaking milestone for local nonprofit support.
