BLOOMINGTON – The City of Bloomington announced local historian, cultural preservationist and storyteller Elizabeth Mitchell as the 2026 Living Legend.

For more than 50 years, Mitchell worked to preserve African American history, install historic markers recognizing formerly segregated schools, produce documentaries, and elevate community voices. Her lifelong dedication to ensuring that our shared history is remembered and celebrated makes her a truly deserving Living Legend.
The City’s Black History Month observance began earlier this month with a Community Kickoff event, during which Muhammad Saahir was recognized as the 2026 Visionary Leader Award recipient.
On Saturday, February 21, from noon to 2 p.m., the City will host the annual Youth Poster Board Contest at Bloomington City Hall, 401 N. Morton St. First-, second-, and third-place prizes will be awarded in three categories: Elementary (Grades 4–6), Middle (Grades 7–8), and High School (Grades 9–12). The event is free and open to the public.
Black History Month events will conclude with the Black History Month Gala on Saturday, February 28, at Woolery Mill, 2250 W. Sunstone Drive. The event will begin with a reception and silent auction at 6 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m. The program will recognize 2026 Living Legend Elizabeth Mitchell and the Commission on the Status of Black Males’ Outstanding Black Leaders of Tomorrow.
Tickets are $60 and must be purchased in advance from the Buskirk-Chumley Theater at bctboxoffice.org or 812-323-3020. Tickets are expected to sell quickly. The City invites residents to close out Black History Month in celebration, reflection, and joy.
