COLUMBUS — The Indiana State Police (ISP) Versailles Post is investigating an incident at the Bartholomew County Jail after a female inmate was found unresponsive in her cell Saturday afternoon.
According to a news release from the Indiana State Police, Bartholomew County Correction Officers were conducting a routine check at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they discovered the woman on the floor.
The inmate, who was being housed in a cell alone at the time, was found in a state of medical distress. Jail staff immediately initiated emergency care and summoned Bartholomew County EMS.
The female was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital, where she was last reported to be in serious condition. As of Sunday afternoon, her current medical status has not been updated.
In accordance with standard procedure for significant medical incidents or deaths within correctional facilities, Bartholomew County Sheriff Chris Lane requested that the Indiana State Police lead the investigation.
Detectives stated that, at this stage, foul play is not suspected.
The name of the inmate is being withheld by authorities due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
The probe aims to determine the exact sequence of events and the medical cause that led to the woman becoming unresponsive.
