Indiana State Library unveils “The Business of Archives” in upcoming Lunch and Learn

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Library has announced the latest installment of its 2026 Lunch and Learn series, offering a rare glimpse into the commercial foundations of early Indiana.

On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Victoria Duncan of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division will present “The Business of Archives: Account Books in the Indiana State Library.” The program will explore some of the library’s oldest and most significant records, including the Hyacinth Lasselle family collection, which dates back to the 18th century.

The presentation will focus on the intricate world of pre-20th-century accounting. For researchers and history buffs, these account books are more than just numbers; they are a primary source for understanding regional trade, the cost of living, and the daily lives of Hoosier settlers and merchants.

Victoria Duncan will provide practical tips on navigating the complex penmanship and outdated ledger systems used by early French and American traders in the Indiana territory.

This is a hybrid event, allowing attendees to participate either in person or virtually on March 10 from noon until 1:00 p.m. in the History Reference Room, Indiana State Library at 315 West Ohio Street. This event is eligible for one Library Education Unit (LEU) for professional librarians.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch to enjoy during the talk.

Parking validation is available for those who park in the Senate Avenue garage (directly across from the library). Remember to bring your ticket inside.

Seating is limited. Interested participants can register via the State Library’s event calendar.

The Indiana State Library is committed to providing equal access to all programs. Individuals requiring disability-related modifications or auxiliary aids should contact Diana Doore at 317-232-6276 at least 48 hours in advance.
