WASHINGTON – The Washington High School athletic department confirmed a significant leadership change yesterday, announcing the resignation of Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach Bo Burkhart, effective immediately.

Burkhart, who was in the midst of his first year leading the Hatchets, concludes his tenure with a 5-9 record. While the school did not specify the exact reasons behind the mid-season departure, the move comes as the team enters a critical stretch of the winter schedule.
To ensure stability for the student-athletes, Varsity Assistant Brandt Schuckman has agreed to take the reins. Schuckman will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Schuckman is no stranger to the Hatchet culture; as a former standout player for Washington, he brings a deep understanding of the program’s storied history and expectations. His immediate challenge will be rallying a young roster during a quick turnaround.
The Hatchets don’t have much time to adjust to the coaching change before hitting the hardwood. The team faces a demanding back-to-back weekend on Friday the Hatches travel to take on Tecumseh and on Saturday the team returns to the Hatch House for a home tilt against Gibson Southern.
The Washington community remains one of the most passionate basketball fanbases in Indiana, and all eyes will be on how the team responds to Schuckman’s leadership in the coming days.
